Acquisition and Implementation of a New GIS System
The St. Bernard Port and Harbor District (Port) contracted CSRS to design and develop a new geographic information system (GIS). Before this project, the Port had no GIS hardware, software, or GIS data. Our team started with a data gap analysis of existing data collected around the Port by other local, state, and federal organizations and met with Port staff to determine immediate hardware and software needs. Once identified, the CSRS team began to implement the Port's new GIS.
During the first six months, our team implemented an ArcGIS Online system and developed a detailed lease management system for all Port-owned buildings and laydown yards they manage. This online dashboard allows Port staff to access lease documents, building footprints, cost information, and important lease terms needed to manage their complicated lease program and plan for future infrastructure expansions. Additionally, our team implemented Esri's ArcGIS Collector to collect water and sewer features located on Port properties.
Using drones, the CSRS team collected high-resolution orthophotos of all Port-owned properties. The 1-inch resolution orthophotos were used to produce a detailed Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the Port's property for civil staff in new developments at the Port.
The GIS developed during this project allows Port staff to understand and protect their assets, leading to more streamlined workflows and a better understanding of their properties. The GIS has already been a great addition to the Ports management workflow and helps their staff almost daily. With the development of an Ersi ArcGIS Enterprise system now under development, the Port will have a leading-edge GIS to support their day-to-day activities.
